Due to recent law changes, a person who wishes to run as a write-in candidate for national, state, county or 1^st class city office, must file an affidavit of write-in candidacy in order to have those votes tabulated. The affidavit for national and state candidates must be filed with the secretary of state. The affidavit for county and 1^st class city candidates must be filed with the county election officer. The deadline to file the affidavits is the fourth Monday prior to Election Day.  

                                                                                                                                    – Write-in candidates for township office and precinct office are not required to file an affidavit.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        – The law that covers these changes is K.S.A. 25-305.
